Make Home Security a Part of Your Summer Vacation Plans
Summer brings heat, pools, and vacations. As summer approaches, families plan out their annual vacation, either choosing a regular vacation spot or opting for the more adventurous location. Either way, summer gives you an opportunity to take a break from work, school, and whatever else might be weighing you down throughout the year.
Planning a trip generally starts with picking the destination. This depends on the amount of money and time available, among other considerations. You can go with a touristic vacation to Disney World or a low-key retreat to a secluded beach. You can opt for visiting family in another state or set sail on a Caribbean cruise. The choices are endless. Once the spot is picked out, the planning begins. The dates are chosen, the guests are invited, and the hotels and transportation are reserved. The trip is set. There’s nothing else to plan, right? Wrong.
What many people forget to plan out is home security while they are away on their summer vacations. A few minutes of planning can save you the trouble of returning to an empty home when the trip is over. It’s well worth a few moments of your attention.
Making your home secure while you’re away on an extended summer vacation requires a few more considerations than a mere weekend getaway. The main consideration is the added time away. You should start with evaluating your existing home alarm system. You may be like many Americans who have one but rarely use it. Unfortunately an unused alarm screwed into a wall is hardly intimidating to potential robbers. If you have home alarm, make sure it works. If you don’t have one, then spend the little extra to purchase one and have it installed.
Second, tell a trusted neighbor where you are going and how long you will be away. You can give them your contact information. This will provide you with eyes and ears while you are away from your home. It may also be the same person you have pick up newspapers and mail, water your plants, and feed your animals. If you will be gone long, you can alternatively put a stop on your mail at the post office.
Third, consider setting up timers for inside lights. This will add to the appearance that someone is home. Each night the living room lights can come on, for example. Another good option is to install motion detector lights over the garage door and in the backyard. This will add lights to a home that will be unusually dark while you are away.
Fourth, pick up any extra set of keys you have hidden outside. The keys under the flowerpot on the porch or under the welcome mat are not fooling anyone. You wouldn’t hand over the keys to your front door to a robber if he asked you, so why leave them there?
Once you have taken these few steps to increasing home security, you can start planning the summer vacation and rest assured that your home will be protected. Don’t forget to make this a part of your vacation planning this year.
